The Effects of Hydroxyurea on Mitomycin C Induced Chromosome¡¤Aberrations



Abstract
The present study was undertaken in an attempt to examine the potentiation by hydroxyurea in G_2 of mitomycin C-induced chromosomal aberrations in human leukocytes, comparing mitotic obtained were as follows:
1. Mitotic index when treated with mitomycin C and hydroxyurea decreased significantly, compared with single treatment of mitomycin C or hydroxyurea.
2. Frequencies of chromosomal aberrations increased significantly when treated with mitomycin C and hydroxyurea, compared with single treatment of mitomycin C or hydroxyurea.
3. Chromosome gaps among types of chromosomal aberrations were induced most frequently when treated with mitomycin C and/or hydroxyurea and chromosome breaks showed dominantly when treated with mitomycin C and hydroxyurea.
4. Chromosomal aberrations were induced mostly in the A, B, C and D chromosome group. Chromosome gaps were induced with significant difference among the A, B, C and D group when treated with mitomycin C and hydroxyurea, and among the A, B and D group when treated with mitomycin C.
